Justice Rising International (JRI), a US-based non-profit organization transforming war zones through education, seeks support to deliver quality conflict-sensitive education beyond its network of schools located in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Justice Rising seeks to transform areas of conflict:

  1. In the short-term by creating access to education in mid- and post-conflict communities where good schools do not exist, thereby creating safe learning spaces for children who would otherwise miss out on their education;
  2. In the medium-term by delivering a quality, conflict-sensitive education and ensuring school completion through secondary school; and
  3. In the long-term by (a) developing transformative civic leaders that are equipped with the tools to create durable solutions for peace, and (b) by developing evidence-backed education tools and interventions for conflict areas that can be widely scaled.

JRI is an established school network operator that exists to transform areas of conflict by providing access to quality, conflict-sensitive education. JRI currently serves 4,000 students and 200 teachers across its 23-school network in the North Kivu province of the DRC. In addition to achieving gender parity across its network, more than 95% of Justice Rising students have passed the national primary and secondary school exit exams, outpacing the national average of ~75%.

SMoLL Steps is Justice Rising’s quality schooling framework that is designed to support schools operating in protracted conflict and crisis settings. This approach prioritizes the Safety, Motivation, and Learning of children in schools that are Legitimate and Sustainable.

Successful candidate(s) will play a key role in establishing partnerships that enable capacity-building projects using the SMoLL Steps quality schooling framework.

Job Description

Partnership Development

  • Work with Justice Rising Directors and CTO to identify relevant geographies, communities, and school systems for outreach.
  • Work with Justice Rising Directors and CTO to identify aligned funding opportunities, and prepare Justice Rising to receive and manage long-term SMoLLS funding.
  • Travel to/visit communities in regions with protracted conflict to develop partnerships, meeting with all key stakeholders (school network operators, school leaders, local governments, community leadership, humanitarian cluster leads) to assess the fit of the SMoLLS framework and establish agreements around SMoLL Steps activities.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for new school networks and communities, developing a pipeline of future partners.

Project Management

  • Collaborate with the Justice Rising Directors and CTO to develop key goals and milestones around each SMoLL Steps Capacity-Building Project.
  • Work with the Justice Rising technical team on SMoLL Steps on non-schooling aspects of program implementation, including budgeting, scheduling, and contracting.
  • Monitor/track implementation progress, preparing reports for leadership, funders, and partners.

Additional Information

Management of Consultancy

The main point of contact for the consultant will be Edison Lee (Managing Director), supported by Cassandra Lee (Executive Director) and Ee-Reh Owo (Chief Technical Officer). Invoices will be submitted by the consultant to Edison Lee on a monthly basis.

Period of Engagement

From June 2024 to December 2024. Consultant will work 15 to 20 hours/week with a maximum of 400 hours in total over the course of the contract.

Proposals

Ideal candidates may come from a global education background or any other sectors, so long as they have a strong project management background in either a humanitarian or global development setting. Experience building and managing partnerships across different country contexts is essential; relevant experience from either francophone Africa, the Middle East, or protracted conflict settings is desirable.
