Nurture First

NurtureFirst works to build and improve systems that support home based childcare (HBCC) providers globally, so they can deliver evidence-based, affordable, culturally relevant childcare wherever they are. While over 70% of children globally are looked after in informal home-based childcare settings that enable their parents to work, HBCC is an almost completely overlooked, under-resourced and under-valued sector. NurtureFirst works at the global level to raise attention and mainstream best policies and practices to support home-based care providers, and at the local level through partners to shift systems. We are piloting eight systems-changing interventions to influence policies and practices from governments and civil society organizations in three Counties in Kenya (in Murang’a, Kisumu, and Mombasa) to learn how to best support home-based care providers.

GDI’s role

GDI has developed NurtureFirst’s global and local systems-change strategy in Kenya, designed its name and brand identity, and is building out its team and expansion approach. We are working towards launching NurtureFirst as an independent organization in the coming years.
