Research Consultant – Refugee Investment Network

Organization Description

Today, more than 120 million people have been forcibly displaced worldwide – facing significant challenges to thrive in their new locations, despite data showing their enormous untapped potential. The Refugee Investment Network (RIN) is the first impact investing and blended finance collaborative dedicated to creating long-term solutions to global forced migration. RIN has developed a “Refugee Lens” investing framework to qualify and track investments which it leverages to move private capital from commitment to active investment in projects and companies that benefit refugees and host communities.

Project Overview

The consultant will support RIN with research and analysis across two projects funded by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM):

  • Measuring the Economic Impact of Refugee ID Policy Reform in Kenya (80% time allocation)
    • This project aims to assess how reforms to refugee identification policies in Kenya impact refugee self-reliance, economic participation and wider growth.
  •  Refugee Lens Investment Market Assessment in Zambia (20% time allocation)
    • This project focuses on identifying market-based opportunities and challenges for Refugee Lens Investing (RLI) in Zambia, to support greater economic integration of refugees and the mobilization of private capital.

Responsibilities

  • Review of Research Materials:
    • Review and synthesize existing research materials, reports, and relevant policy documents related to refugee ID policy reform and investment landscapes in both countries.
  • Desk Research and Data Analysis:
    • Conduct desk research to identify relevant economic and policy frameworks in Kenya and Zambia.
    • Support the analysis of primary data collected from field research and interviews, providing insights into refugee economic activity, policy impacts, and investment opportunities.
  • Support Drafting and Editing of Research Findings:
    • Assist in drafting and editing research reports, synthesizing key findings, and ensuring clarity and consistency across project deliverables.
    • Provide quality editing and refinement of technical and narrative reports for both projects.
  • Dissemination Support:
    • Assist in the planning and execution of dissemination events, including preparing materials, coordinating logistics, and supporting event facilitation.
    • Ensure dissemination events in Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa effectively convey the research findings to key stakeholders, including investors and policymakers.
  • Liaison with RIN and Research Partners:
    • Collaborate closely with RIN staff and in-country research partners in both Kenya and Zambia to ensure seamless coordination of research activities.
    • Regularly communicate with local stakeholders and ensure alignment of research goals and processes.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong background in refugee-related research, including refugee lens investing, economic analysis, and policy review.
  • Proven experience conducting desk research and synthesizing large volumes of data.
  • Track record of innovative finance and financial inclusion research & analysis in emerging markets.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills, with experience drafting research reports and summaries.
  • Strong project organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Graduate degree (especially MBA) is highly desirable.

Time Commitment: 10 days per month for 6 months, starting 10th October, 2024
