Background:

The Refugee Investment Network (RIN) works to bridge the gap between an increasing number of investors interested in refugee lens investments and the growing ecosystem of refugee-led and refugee-supporting entrepreneurs and ventures. RIN has established itself as the specialized investment intermediary that brings together the impact investing and blended finance communities to create long-term economic solutions to global forced migration. RIN’s mission is to shift the political and social dialogue about the value of refugees and unlock investment opportunities that create dignified new jobs and measurably improve the self-reliance opportunities for refugees and the communities welcoming them. By doing so, RIN builds more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economies and communities. 

Position Description:

The RIN Africa Director position is a unique opportunity to play a foundational role in an early­ stage social enterprise that is poised to build a vibrant refugee lens investment ecosystem in Africa.

The Africa Director will thus serve as RIN’s focal point on the continent for project management, the creation of country market assessments and network building in RIN’s priority countries. S/he will develop partnerships with RIN consultants and subcontractors, investors, incubators, entrepreneurs, and key stakeholders to help expand the field of RLI in Africa. Additionally, the Africa Director will coordinate and help identify, analyze, and vet potential refugee lens investments, and bridge gaps between investees and potential investors. This position will report to RIN’s Managing Directors.

Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Excellent project management skills;
  • Ability to manage in-country implementation teams and partners across multiple geographies leading country-level refugee lens market assessments for RIN’s priority countries, ensuring high quality and timely deliverables;
  • Support research and analysis of refugee lens investing (RLI) landscapes and the creation of RLI road maps to help understand the current business, investment, and policy environments for refugee-led and refugee-supporting entrepreneurs, businesses, and funds;
  • Represent RIN with program stakeholders in Africa at all levels including with donors, national and local government officials, the private sector and humanitarian organizations;
  • Report to and maintain close communications with RIN senior management in the tracking and execution of project objectives;

Deal Sourcing & Investor Relations

  • Liaise with local stakeholders and represent RIN with existing partners while helping to build new, successful relationships with potential refugee investors, incubators, entrepreneurs, and key organizations;
  • Track opportunities, stakeholders, and potential investors as the RLI space evolves and grows;
  • Identify and vet potential in-country deal sourcing partners and RLI deals;
  • Support the development and expansion of the RIN deals platform to showcase RLI opportunities stemming from African assessment work;
  • Contribute to the development of RIN’s refugee lens investment training curriculum to educate current and potential refugee lens investors and stakeholders;
  • Facilitate refugee lens investment deals and support refugee lens investors in refugee lens investment strategy development.
Desired Qualifications + Qualities:

RIN is looking for candidates with a demonstrated interest and passion for its mission with the following qualifications and qualities:

  • Strong project management experience with an ability to supervise and direct teams working in multiple countries simultaneously, including working collaboratively with consultants, contracting, and community organizations in emerging markets (preferably in Africa);
  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • MBA / MA graduate degree in Global Development, Impact Investing, Innovative Finance, Economics, Finance, International Relations, or related disciplines preferred;
  • Strong analytical, writing and editorial skills;
  • Ability to help source and analyze potential refugee investments;
  • Ability to model, develop and integrate new financing models and model the business cases in this regard;
  • Understanding and capacity for Systems Thinking, with capacity to develop innovative policies, systems and new eco-systems;
  • Experience in engaging with private sector for purposes of international development, i.e., impact investment;
  • Demonstrated capacities in communication, coordination and in working in a multicultural staffing context;
  • Experience working with incubators, accelerators, and entrepreneurs in emerging markets is a plus.
